Birth of a Dinocorn

Next month The Unicorn and I are tying the knot! The long road to the wedding is nearly over and I can’t wait to walk down the aisle and marry the best thing that ever happened to me…

“Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy….”

The song that started it all!

The Unicorn and I met at Birmingham Pride in 2012. There is an ongoing dispute amongst friends over who we owe our meeting to (for the record its either the drunk one or the really REALLY drunk one) but I personally thank Carly Rae Jepsen on a daily basis for writing a pretty catchy song that could be used as a chat up line!

“… But here’s my number, so call me, maybe?!”

Birmingham Pride 2012

Short version, we met in The Village bar, I used my best line (which I had to repeat 4 times because she couldn’t hear me), I filled the first awkward silence by throwing cider down my front (luckily she didn’t notice), bought her a drink and the rest, as they say, is history.

After Pride, I headed back home to Northampton (where I was living at the time) and announced at rugby training the following week that I’d met someone. The response was mixed, with the most memorable being:

“Jeez, nobody ever meets anyone relationship worthy at Pride; what is she some kind of unicorn?!”

The nickname stuck.

A Totally ROARsome Engagement

So when it came to the proposal The Unicorn managed to sneak in there first, and it’s a good job too because nothing I came up with could have trumped putting an engagement ring on a dinosaur tooth in the Natural History Museum!

Suffice to say I was completely taken by surprise.

We got into the museum early and had the dinosaur exhibit to ourselves (apart from one other woman who happened to wander around the corner at the precise moment after The Unicorn had proposed and I was in joyful floods of tears – awks!)

It was perfect.

We even got a free tour of ‘The Spirit Collection’ which included access to some of Darwin’s original specimens taken while he was on board the HMS Beagle, as well as seeing the giant squid — it was a total geek out and I loved every second of it!

We decided to go back to the NHM for our Pre-Wedding shoot, with the lovely Jeni Smith, to celebrate where all the craziness that is planning the wedding started!

You can read all about the engagement shoot and have a sneaky peak at some of the amazing pics here.

So, that’s the story of how we met and how my life changed forever — all because I got drunk at Pride and decided that The Unicorn needed rescuing from a pretty scary, booty shaking, lesbian that she hadn’t even noticed was shaking in her general direction…
